When Courage Sees Through the Chains

Philippians 1:12 (ESV) – “I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.”

What do you do when life does not go the way you hoped?

Paul wanted to go to Rome as a preacher, but he arrived as a prisoner. Humanly speaking, it looked like his ministry had been interrupted. But Paul saw it differently. He did not focus only on his chains. He saw that even his suffering was being used by God for the progress of the gospel.

That is what gospel courage looks like. It does not pretend that suffering is easy. It sees hardship through the purpose of Christ.

Paul says that his imprisonment actually opened new doors. The imperial guard heard about Christ. Other believers became more bold to speak the Word without fear. Even in a hard situation, Christ was still being proclaimed. And because Christ was proclaimed, Paul rejoiced.

Then Paul says those well-known words: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” His life was centered on Christ. If he kept living, it meant fruitful service. If he died, it meant being with Christ. Either way, Christ would be honored. That is why Paul could face uncertainty with courage.

Paul also reminds the church to live worthy of the gospel, to stand firm together, and not to be frightened by opposition. Gospel courage is not only personal. It is something believers live out together.

So today, do not look at your situation only through fear or frustration. Ask the Lord to help you see it through the gospel. What feels like a limitation may become a place where Christ is made known.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to see my circumstances through the gospel. When I face hardship, give me courage to trust You and remain faithful. May Christ be honored in my life, whether in comfort or in difficulty. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
