Vessels of Honour
2 Timothy 2:20–21 (NASB95)"Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work."
In every home, we use different vessels—some for ordinary use and some for special occasions. Paul uses this same picture to describe how God wants to use us. Not every believer is automatically a vessel of honour. But anyone who desires to be used by God must be willing to go through the process of cleansing, purifying, and preparing.
The first step is to cleanse ourselves from what is dishonourable—sinful habits, ungodly influences, and divisive behaviour. It is not just about avoiding what is wrong but removing anything that keeps us from being fully devoted to God. Even the most expensive cup won’t be used if it is dirty.
Second, we are called to be sanctified—set apart for God’s purposes. Just like a wedding dress is not worn for everyday chores, our lives must be distinct, dedicated, and holy. Sanctification is not just about saying “no” to sin but saying “yes” to God.
Finally, we must be prepared for every good work. Readiness does not come overnight. It comes from daily time in God’s Word, growing in character, and being available when God calls. A vessel of honour is not just clean and set apart—but ready.
Are you ready to be used by God today? What must be cleansed, what must be set apart, and how are you preparing?
Prayer:
Lord, make me a vessel for Your purpose. Cleanse my heart from anything that dishonours You. Set me apart for Your will. Prepare me for every good work You have planned. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
